CSI Lunch & Learn - Custom Curved Natural Roof / Wall Systems - Kenny McMann, CSI, CDT

Thanks to the East Tennessee Community Design Center and Wayne Blasius and Josh Shaffer for allowing CSI to use their conference room again. Thanks also to Kenny McMann with Morin Corporation who left a sick family behind in Atlanta to present an informative presentation on Custom Curved Natural Metal Roof & Wall Systems. Kenny talked about aluminum, galvanized, stainless, copper and titanium metal panels, their installation methods, and applications in great detail. The Knoxville CSI chapter had 12 attendees at today’s Lunch and Learn with a Panera Bread lunch provided by Kenny and Morin Corporation. Thanks to Jeremy Shipp with Johnson & Galyon for recruiting Kenny as a speaker and organizing another great Lunch & Learn.

CSI Student Affiliate Meeting

There were fourteen students in attendance to hear award winning James Rose AIA, Senior Lecturer and Adjunct Assistant Professor, Director, Institute for Smart Structures speak about “Work from the Governor’s Chair for Energy & Urbanism Studio”. The 3D printed work was the most interesting portion of the presentation and had the most discussion. Pizza and drinks were provided by the CSI Knoxville chapter.

Sherry Ault put on an excellent program that gave an overview of the documentation necessary to set up a BIM project to ensure that you have the results your clients require. The Contract Document world in changing and she showed us one new piece of the puzzle. She also showed some great tools that are available to assist you in the management of your BIM projects.

Ground Penetrating Radar Lunch & Learn

Todays lunch & learn with Biswa Pokharel on Ground Penetrating Radar. Thanks to Biswa and Bhate Geosciences for an informative presentation and a great lunch consisting of chicken pasta, green beans, roasted potatoes along with brownies and three types of cookies for dessert. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR): A geophysical method that uses radar pulses to image the subsurface. This non-destructive method transmits electromagnetic pulses into the subsurface and based on the reflected signals, it detects presence and location of subsurface targets. GPR can be used in varieties of medium including soil, rock, concrete, ice, freshwater etc. It can detect subsurface objects (rebar, post-tensioned cables, underground utilities), changes in material, voids, cracks etc. GPR can be utilized in several different applications including but not limited to Geotechnical, Subsurface Utility Engineering, and Environmental Engineering.

Student Affiliate Meeting

The Knoxville CSI student chapter had 18 students in attendance at the monthly meeting yesterday evening. The details of the GSR neighborhood library competition were discussed and the students broke into smaller groups. Four groups of students sketched ideas for the neighborhood library and presented the best ideas from each group to the entire chapter. The group enjoyed the Cajun jambalaya prepared by the CSI Knoxville chapter president Gary Bergeron while working on their ideas.
